Review of Scoob! (2020) by Afm185 — 04 Dec 2020
As a fan of Scooby Doo I appreciated a lot of what this did especially with some of the side characters, but my main criticism as a fan is that this isn’t a Scooby Doo movie. It’s a superhero movie.
There’s basically no mystery whatsoever. Everything is very, very straightforward. But as an animated superhero movie it was very entertaining. I really liked the characterization of everyone (even if I didn’t love the voice actor chosen for Shaggy), although they don’t go very in depth for anyone but Shaggy and the Blue Falcon.
And kinda Scooby but Scooby’s pretty simple. The story is fun, if predictable, and the villain Dick Dasterdly is also good. The fact that he’s not total evil and has an understandable motivation is nice.
The animation is really pretty and colorful, there is a decent amount of creativity in display, and the writing is funny enough at times. Some cheesy lines here and there but there’s actually a few dramatic moments that I genuinely felt which surprised me.
It’d be great if they made another theatrically released Scooby Doo movie in this same style but made it a real Scooby Doo movie. I’m not exactly disappointed by this result, but I feel it could be more.
And apparently there’s gonna be a Hanna Barberra movie universe, so I assume they’ll have the chance for that. Hopefully. I totally forgot about that, but it makes sense considering this movie and how many of those characters they got in here.
Kinda makes me glad they told a self contained story when they probably could’ve opened up plots for a bunch of them.
