Review of Self/less (2015) by Tony1984 — 27 Jan 2018
I'm deliberately overrating Self/Less to counteract the vindictive low 30 score by the critics. They really seem to have it in for Ryan Reynolds. Maybe he's too entertaining? Just not art-house enough I suppose. How and ever I normally look to the User scores anyway.
This movie has a great premise. Transhumanism is a fascinating (and frightening) subject which will affect all lives in the not too distant future. The moral and ethical questions are going to be as divisive as the pro choice pro life culture wars of the present time.
Does this movie do the topic justice? Yes and No. Its first and foremost an action movie with a relatively low budget and small cast. It’s well done for what it is and whilst I would preferred it went down a different path narratively I won't mark it down for not doing so. The storytelling could have been better for sure and the supporting Latin actress was weakly written but the everyone else was good. Especially Mandy who is a born child star.
One weird aside was Ben Kinsgley's garish New York apartment which didn't suit him. I thought it was so vulgar even Trump wouldn't like it. Turns out it was a Trump apartment..
