Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Emile H — 20 Oct 2016
In over three hours, Kurosawa has been able to keep the film entertaining and exciting in all its aspects. Our seven heroes feel very dedicated to the cause, and much of the movie depends on the trust between them and the villagers.
It's more provocative and realistic than its later re-imaginings, with any moment of drama such as loss holding enough weight to be justified. But there is a lot of humor, with some characters providing a bit of levity in the face of danger, others laughing at it.
And need I say more about the action? Every sequence is shot well, every sword strike is dealt with purpose, and its hour long climax brings its all. You can definitely see its massive influence in many films that follow, and for good reason.
With Seven Samurai, Kurosawa brought the best out of the cinema art form and what it had to offer.
