Zhang Yimou's Shadow embraces a sombre, monochromatic palette, which takes a moment to get used to, but once you do, you appreciate the textures, the sounds, even the beauty in the dreary drizzle that permeates every scene.
The story of Commander Pei and his shadow have enough twists and turns to keep you captivated, and Deng Chao plays both roles convincingly.
