Sherlock Gnomes isn't especially clever or funny. It's a completely predictable story, but it has plenty of energy, colors and corny puns, so it will keep younger viewers entertained. It's a bland, yet harmless film.
However, when it comes to animated movies that will help introduce the character of Sherlock Holmes to your children, The Great Mouse Detective wins.
