Review of Shot Caller (2017) by Chris R — 19 Sep 2017
A dark and quiet movie...it's unsettling. The transformation of a man into a monster. Some of the characters are disturbing. The sadness of the movie comes after watching it. I watched it again and and found that many more small details stood out as being very important.
The transformation takes place over a number of years and is remembered where the beginning of the movie is the present and the memories of what it took to get to this point. I'll give away just one small spoiler: there is a point in the movie where Jacob's lawyer tells him that he will be tested in prison and that if he doesn't fight back then prison will be very hard.
That is a point where what seems to be important advice absolutely sets Jacob on the path he takes. After seeing it a second time I wonder if he hadn't been given that advice how things would have been different.
