Review of Singin' in the Rain (1952) by David L — 23 Mar 2017

This is probably the oldest film I have watched but has achieved the most astounding credential of remaining as much of an entertainment spectacle in present day society as it undoubtedly was back in the day! To put it into context, this film has been about twice as long as I have been alive, has evidently stood the test of time (and then some) and is the definition of a true grea I was naive in thinking that this film was solely an inspiration because of the title song and was pleasantly surprised to witness the credible storyline that ran alongside it.

I had no idea of the comedy value that this possessed and also the genius of Gene Kelly and Donald O Connor's dancing ability. To perform those lengthy musical sequences in one take in such synchronisation was breath taking, with the latters ability to run up a wall the highlight of the performance - could George Sampson do that ?! Aside from the combination of song, dance, and humour, the main plot it was all centred around was equally as quality, a modern day love story if I ever I saw one with a lead gentleman falling in love with an up and coming starlet, who along with his best mate, helps rescue his ailing silent film career with the introduction of a musically themed singing production.

With any good fairy tale, there always has to be the pantomime villain though, and this was provided by his on screen leading lady (with an incredibly annoying voice) who does her best to halt any such romance in order to keep her own career alive.

Admittedly this may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I'd recommend anyone to give it a go just to understand what we mean when a film is described as a 'classic'.
