Review of Singularity (2017) by Jay C — 16 Jul 2018
It's not the worst movie I've ever seen on Netflix. It's not even the worst sci-fi film I've ever seen. When you take it for what it is, the movie is watchable. All the scenes with John Cusack were added years after the movie was actually made, and then spliced in.
That is never, ever a sign that what you end up with is going to be a solid movie. The actual plot of the movie is really solid, and I would have loved if the guy who wrote the script had just tried to sell his script instead of make it himself.
The CGI is passable, and *spoiler alter* the Cusack scenes are all right, even if it's weird that he's watching a third person point when he should be seeing through the robot's eyes. It gives the impression that there are millions of tiny mini cameras all over the planet, which would negate much of the plot.
It also sucks that the CGI budget didn't allow for realistic human hunting. The colossal robots Kronos uses are useless for hunting what is surely only a few hundred or a few thousand people left, but I'm sure they realized quickly they couldn't afford the small robots that would make this plot actually interesting.
In short, the concept is pretty good, the execution is awful, it ends up with two people mostly just walking around the forest. But if you liked Beyond Skyline or any of the Sharknados, you'll make it through this and then lament that this story wasn't taken up by people with more skill and experience.
