Review of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) by Ryan D — 08 Jun 2018
Solo: A Star Wars story just didn't stand a chance. After the bitterly divisive Last Jedi, the numerous production problems on this film, the egotism of Lucasfilm head, Kathleen Kennedy, and the idiotic actions of co-writer, Jon Kasdan, telling everyone that Lando Calrissian was a pansexual, Solo: A Star Wars Story just didn't stand a chance.
Fans were jilted by the stupidity and arrogance of Lucasfilm and Disney and the impact of The Last Jedi will reverberate on the franchise for years to come. Hell, the anticipation for those who wanted to see this film sat at only 36% on this very site (A percentage I have not seen since 2011's Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star), which is astonishing, given that at worst, other films would hover in the 80% range, let alone for a Star Wars film.
But unlike a disaster like say, the 2016 Ghostbusters (Which deserved every last bit of the critical flagellation and box office failure it received), Solo: A Star Wars story is actually a rather enjoyable film.
Sure, it doesn't do anything new, doesn't add much to Han Solo's story, or reinvent anything, it's actually a rather entertaining action film with elements of western films thrown in for good measure.
It's purely a popcorn flick, but a rather entertaining one with terrific acting, funny humor, and thrilling action sequences thrown in. It'll never be revered as a classic within its franchise, but perhaps in future years it will be examined as a fun diversion within the series that became a victim of the sins of previous entries and the franchise owners.
It didn't deserve its ultimate fate.
