Review of Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) by Nancy The Shieldmaiden — 25 Sep 2008
Two young friends discover that the dreams offered at Mr. Darkâ??s Carnival come at a price. Made by Disney, but hardly a Disney movie, Something Wicked This Way Comes is genuinely unsettling. The director, Jack Clayton, had a pedigree for scaring the bejesus out of people, though this is not quite in the same league as The Innocents.
Jonathan Pryce excels as the mysterious Mr. Dark, but it is Jason Robards who steals the show. His weary decency underpins the entire movie, papering over some of its limitations. The special effects are a bit ropey, even for 1983, and the child actors could have been better.
Overall, however, Clayton establishes the right tone, a sense of otherworldliness in small town America.
