This movie is quite the trip, taking Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield) and the audience on a crazy rollercoaster of a ride into a world that is more sci-fi than may initially let on. At first glimpse, Sorry to Bother You is a film about a man who, through the combination of getting lucky and hard work, manages to reach the American Dream.
However, the film's message is about the opposite, something that we find out after Cassius “makes it” to the top. Cassius has achieved class mobility but at the expense of his former coworker’s wellbeing and his integrity.
Cassius didn’t cheat the system, he played into it. Sorry to Bother You manages to say some important things about late-stage capitalism, racism and the unseen havoc which both wreak. Capitalism and the associated systems are so integral to the movie's messages and content that the main character's name is a description of the currency within the system, i.
E. Cash Is Green. If one wants to understand Leftist discourse, this movie certainly is greatly essential. Sorry to Bother You is a cautionary tale, a comedy, and most importantly a seething satire.
