Review of Southside with You (2016) by Tim M — 27 Jan 2018
'Southside With You' doesn't have to have to be a first date movie involving the future president and first lady, but it gives you a bit of perspective of who the two people were before the public eye. The movie chronicles the long first date between the couple and is thoroughly engaging and entertaining.
Parker Sawyers plays a young Barack Obama while Tika Sumpter counters as Michelle Robinson (Obama). The duo have amazing chemistry. They are not doing impressions which is perfect as it doesn't distract you from the story. You could so easily substitute the characters for anyone. It's a wonderful date movie in which we get a slice of how people were before the spotlight. Who knows if it's all true, but you shouldn't care. This is a rom-com that is a delight for the soul.
