Review of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) by Omar L — 17 Dec 2018
I had my doubts when I first heard Jake Johnson's voice as Peter Parker, but rest assured, he was a terrific choice for Peter, the right mix of silliness, maturity, and immaturity. But more importantly, Shameik Moore's work in bringing Miles Morales to life is incredible, and the importance of Miles is not to be understated.
He's not simply the "black Spider-Man" or "biracial Spider-Man;" MIles Morales helped bring new comics readers into the world. As the language of superhero movies becomes more and more complex, even the seemingly simplest stories require a level of comprehension that would have seemed unattainable two decades ago.
Nowadays, kids are much more quick to pick up on story structure and character and themes involving alternate realities. With that in mind, we can have stories like these, with creators unafraid to challenge audiences, knowing that these high-minded concepts can be absorbed by today's audiences.
