Review of Spirited (2022) by Tvjerry — 19 Nov 2022
The Dickens classic gets yet another re-working with Will Ferrell playing Christmas Present and Ryan Reynolds as the Scrooge type. The plot has been upended, while a snappy approach to comedy modernizes the approach, including a Judith Dench cameo.
Ferrell is a bit toned down (as is Octavia Spencer) and Reynolds shines with his usual comic charms. The plentiful songs are pleasant and tuneful, while the staging shines on spectacle and energetic dancing.
Given the star power, this new holiday treat will entertain with lively musical numbers and hip references, while managing to hold onto some Holiday heart.
