Review of Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) by Joe C — 18 May 2018
JJ Abrams understands 2 things.
1) Bigger is better but over the top is best.
2) Throw in a ton of mysteries and worry about solving them later, or never.
This film looks and feels like it should but the plot is a remake of A New Hope without any of the elements that made the original such a classic. It's an empty experience with very little skill. It's Star Wars snake oil. It's as throw away as the endless plastic pollution it generated. The only reason it did well was because of the enormous good will that George Lucas built over the years. An empire that Kathleen Kennedy is destroying through her obvious and embarrassing lack of creativity and compassion. A very pale imitation of a great man's artwork.
