Review of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) by Nvmb3Rth30Ry — 20 Dec 2019
Sadly, whilst the cast, production design and direction are first-rate, and although the movie experience in itself is solidly entertaining, this overstuffed affair lacks even a hint of the subtlety, imagination and originality of its 1970s ancestors.
Structured around weak and ludicrous plot devices, and in too many ways using a xeroxed template from "Return of the Jedi", itself a very flawed film. I'm absolutely certain that when a nine-film narrative arc was originally envisaged all those decades ago, nobody was expecting episodes 7,8,9 would end up being done as simple rehashes of the immediately prior eps of 4,5,6.
Excruciating. Thank God it's over.
