Review of Starter for 10 (2006) by Chris R — 15 Sep 2008
There aren't many films I think are absolutely note perfect - script, performances, cinematography etc etc. I can think of a few which resonate with me in such a way; Magnolia, My Neighbor Totoro, Double Indemnity, and a few others. Starter For Ten easily fits into that list. This is such a wonderful, funny, touching and thoroughly special film. It reminded me in tone of Local Hero, another note perfect movie. James McAvoy is startlingly good in this movie - how he seems younger than his Shameless character is nothing short of bewildering, yet he does. Also, the writer and director clearly knows what it's like to be infauated with someone, and confuse it with love, and then realise your mistake.
Basically this is an absolute must see which will make you grin, cry, laugh and just generally be glad to be alive.
Five fucking stars.
