Review of Stations of the Cross (2014) by Hank G — 14 Dec 2015
I must admit that I approached this with a preconceived notion that it would offer opportunities for snickers and righteous indignation (since I am no fan of the Catholic Church or any church or religion or fanaticism, even vegetarianism).
And yet I found this film to be an engrossing, thought provoking commentary on extremism and it's ultimate consequences. The unusual static camera and brilliant composition of each scene is like an antidote to cameras gone wild cinematography, evoking the stillness and reflection that epitomizes what is most attractive about religion.
This is art without bells and whistles like music without auto tuning. When the camera finally moves we exhale exhilaration at having witnessed a minor miracle in filmmaking.
