Review of Stories We Tell (2012) by Ryan B — 19 May 2013
Not since Capturing the Friedmans has a documentary moved me as much as Sarah Polley's documentary of her own family. Like Friedmans, it's not so much the "what" of the film that is most impressive but rather the "how" it is expressed.
Polley allows the story to unfold in riveting suspense that reveals the much larger issue of narrative expression and how different perspectives can evoke different things. This is a film about much more than just who Sarah Polley's real father is - it's a film about the stories we tell.
