Review of Strange Magic (2015) by Geoff H — 29 Nov 2015
This was definitely a "learn to love it" movie for me. The first time I just turned it off. The second time I watched with a bit more curiosity. The third time I feel in love. I loved the beauty and the beast, Shakespeare (A Midsummers' Night Dream) plot base.
Musically you know they did the best with what they could afford. Visually I hated the animation until I realized it harked back to Jim Henson's Labyrinth. Then I watched the behind the scenes and discovered all the talent behind it including Alan Cummings, Evan Rachel Woods and HELLO Kristen Chenoweth whom I just adore as the Plum Fairy.
Then I researched the production and found out why Lucas wanted to make this in the first place and the heart and soul he gave it for his three daughters. I have watched it five times this weekend with my kids and the music now gets me humming and singing along.
I actually think they did a wonderful job on song selection. I am also calling this a Cult Classic in the making. Simply put, I fell in love with the Beast and that is all I can say!
