Review of Stranger Than Paradise (1984) by Private U — 25 Jan 2009
Someone else on Facebook compared this to Samuel Beckett, and I think that's very appropriate. Stranger Than Paradise is a very simple, quiet movie that does more to illustrate the three main characters lives than to tell an "interesting" story.
Main character Eddie is a slacker from the Lower East Side whose cousin comes to visit from Hungary. She leaves to go stay with an aunt, and Eddie and his friend Willie go on a road trip to visit her. Then there's a very strange plot twist and they split up.
That's the most dimension you get from the film, but it's an interesting, fun approach to movies. Jarmusch's other work is not so minimal.
