Review of Stranger Than Paradise (1984) by John B — 25 Jun 2007
I was working at a cinema when this first came out, and saw it repeatedly. All the Jarmusch hallmarks are there: minimal plot, long silences, scenes cut just that bit longer than necessary. Jarmusch shows a lightness of touch that is remarkable by any standards, let alone for a first feature.
The film has effortless cool, knowing but gentle humour, and a smokin', one-song soundtrack (apart from John Lurie's original score). Oh, and I always fancied Eszter Balint.
