Review of Suicide Squad (2016) by Jimmy D — 20 Jan 2017
On the most basic level, even if overall it wasn't the strongest, most competently put together film, this should still be thoroughly entertaining. There were some things I liked, even loved. But there were so many things I really didn't like at all.
Will Smith and Margot Robbie were both terrific. The whole cast does a really solid job but so many of them are given such poorly written and flat characters that they just have nothing to work with. Jared Leto acted very well as the Joker, but this iteration of the character is so minimally used that you are just not given nearly enough time to get into this new version and as a result the whole effect of the character just suffers immensely.
He doesn't even really have any great impact on the overall plot of the film, he's just...there. For a grand total of maybe 10 mins of screen time and that's being generous. Completely and utterly underwhelming.
And the music, what a butchered soundtrack. The songs they used were amazing songs, but so poorly used and edited into the film that most of the time it's beyond distracting and just completely out of place.
I hated and despised on a grand level the villain in this film. I can't say anything about the subject without spoiling things so I won't, but I honestly am struggling to put into words how much I loathed it.
Just awful. The movie should've been a blast of insane fun, but even with a character like the Joker involved there is not a single memorable moment in the entire film. There is way too much to talk about and I could go on and on about the pros and cons, mainly cons.
Overall, the film has absolutely horrendous pacing issues, is loud, messy and at times tries so hard it just gave me a headache. I wasn't bored, I was mostly entertained, but this should've been great, not average.
DC and Warner Bros you need to seriously pick up your act because what you've delivered to us so far in your cinematic universe, given the material you have to work with, is downright embarrassing.
Sort it out!
