Review of Surf's Up (2007) by Jon C — 13 Feb 2017
I'll be honest, I didn't expect to like this but I did.
It was a bit overly predictable and why you would choose to have penguins in a "surfing movie" instead of, I dunno...Koalas? Is beyond me. Plus it stinks to high heaven of that "just be yourself" moral message that ruins most other childrens stories these days. But all bitching and whining about why it's not perfect aside, it was really enjoyable and loads better than that other penguin-based animation "happy feet".
The animation was good, the obligatory memorable sidekick is a cool-dude type chicken called chicken joe who as soon as you set eyes on him, you know he's going to steal the show. The "mockumentary" style really works well which is suprising and all the voice actors do a fine job, especially Jeff Bridges who lives up to expectations and pretty much plays a penguin version of "the dude".
In conclusion, it's not perfect...but it's very watchable, a very pleasing 85 minutes.
