I didn't really know what was going on through most of it, but I'm not sure it matters. Either the plot is so deep that they know you won't understand it or it's not important enough to be clear about.
The movie does not establish even a sense of the end goal, so you don't have a sense of what needs to be resolved in the end. Since I was bored through most of it, hoping it would hurry up and get to the point, I never knew how much more was left in it.
That said, the gruesome violence and interesting dancing were bold. An extremely foreign film to most American audiences.
