Review of Swimming with Men (2018) by Anthony D — 15 Jul 2018
The problem with these 'one idea' films is their predictability. We are left entirely at the mercy of how the journey (to the inevitable medal) unfolds and the likeability of the players. The journey is laboured and unfunny and the cast aren't likeable at all. No one has any discernible talent for comedy playing. There's no lightness of touch. Character development is so scant that two of the synchronised swimming team don't have dialogue. Cop out or what!
The finale at the world championships could have been a riot but it's just another lost opportunity. In truth, the film should have ended here because by now we're well off the cliff edge but instead we are given an embarrassing knees-up that has desperation written all over it.
The only revelation in the film is that Jane Horrocks can sustain a part without using a silly voice.
