Review of Tabloid (2010) by Jj M — 16 Aug 2012
Tabloid drags in some bits, but the vast majority of it tells an extremely crazy and utterly ridiculous story with a bunch of fun, idiosyncratic touches. The story starts out simple enough, a Mormon is sent on a missionary, fiance goes after him and figures out a way to retrieve her future husband.
Then it just escalates from there, with a sprinkle of rape, a dash of a desperate tabloid's attempts at getting whatever dirt they can have on Joyce McKinney, a scoop of dog cloning; McKinney's story is almost too nuts to be true.
This complimented with clean interfaces and transitions and truly insightful interviews makes Tabloid an entertaining little documentary. Not once did I sympathize for Joyce, however, which was strange to me since my experience with documentaries about unlikable figures is unfortunately fairly limited.
Nonetheless, you'll be hard pressed to find a documentary as equal parts strange and interesting than Tabloid.
