Review of Take Me to the River (2015) by Zakiyyah S — 18 Sep 2017
Painfully awkward or poorly acted? Either way it's overdramatic and hard to watch. Those shorts are too short, it's a family reunion not the club. She gets her first period, big deal, it's called puberty happens to everyone.
And maybe the family reunion isn't the best place to announce you are gay...like it isn't all about you. The main character being gay didn't even have to be in the movie, doesn't add any value.
His parents are pathetic, they don't defend themselves or their son and settle into their role as outcast, which they just thrust onto their son.The adults don't communicate with each other, almost seeming like strangers.
All this makes the characters really hard to buy. It feels less like a family reunion and more like high school lunch drama, along with the immature, under developed emotions. The ending is just disturbing and unnecessary.
Regret.
