Review of Talk to Me (1996) by Jebus C — 31 Aug 2010
Every now and again an actor has to remind you of who he is. Don Cheadle hasn't done that since Hotel Rwanda and this is his shot at actually doing something worthwhile. The first hour of the movie is terrific and moves at breakneck speed showing Petey breaking into the Djing business.
The second hour shows his decline both as a personality and seeing his hard living take effect. The second hour is tough to sit through and while I appreciate they were trying to tell the whole story most good biopics tend to focus on shorter periods in the lives of performers.
Trying to cover nearly 20 years isn't easy and there are things here that don't quite work. But the cast are great. Cheadle and Taraji P Henson especially. And that opening hour is a blast.
