Review of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023) by Karnidge84 — 08 Aug 2023
If you looked at the movie completely on it's own and not compare it to what all has come before it, it would be perfectly fine. However, the changes to the base story of how the turtles came to be and some of the other character changes just took me out of the movie entirely. Spoilers ahead! No Shredder at all in the movie? I understand there are other villains so not a deal breaker in and of itself. The Turtles learn martial arts by watching kung-fu movies and YouTube videos? That seems like a FAR departure from their origin story, like saying Superman isn't from Krypton, he just happened upon his powers one day. Beebop and Rocksteady aren't villains? Never can I remember a comic series or cartoon where they are not recurring bad guys, so that's weird. April is not a redhead white girl? That really doesn't change anything as she has that same spunky journalist attitude so whatever. There is more cursing in the movie than I expected, and the animation style was jarring at times which made me uncomfortable.
It's the combination of all of these things that made me not really care for the movie. Any one of those things by themselves would not have been a deal breaker. But all of them in the same movie? No thank you.
