Review of That Obscure Object of Desire (1977) by Branden W — 11 Dec 2012
Luis Buñuel's final film is a memorable one, as for the first time in cinema, two actresses play the single role of Conchita, the object of Mathieu's desires. At one point even, the two different actresses alternate their role in the middle of a scene.
Fernando Ray, a regular in Buñuel's later films, plays the role of the sexually- frustrated Mathieu. Nothing short of marvelous, That Obscure Object of Desire will forever remain a classic in the cult of the surreal, as Buñuel concludes his successful career in avant-garde cinema with an arbitrary, absurd cat-and-mouse love story: in other words, typical Luis Buñuel.
