Review of That Obscure Object of Desire (1977) by Lilian W — 03 Dec 2010
What a boring experience! Watching Luis Buñuel for the very first time, I chose his very last work and I was very disappointed for a number of reasons.
1- Visually, the film is not that impressive; lighting was supposed to be more subtle to highlight the sensuality of nude figures, instead it was monotone-sly bright and quite irritating at places. Buñuel's artistic vision is not that unique, in fact the film reminded me of some Egyptian cheap flicks that were shot in Lebanon during the 70's.
2- The acting was awful from all three lead characters. I never really felt that Mateo is burning for Conchita nor did I feel his pain when she manipulated him.
3- Conchita herself: I like the idea of casting two actresses to play the part, but they both failed to embody the surreal nature of the character; they were both more hysterical and psychopathic than mysterious and the Zero-Chemistry with Fernando Rey did not help either.
4- The political tone in the film was completely out of place and not really in parallel or harmony with the main story. That ending scene was so bad it made me laugh.
Still have three other films to watch by Buñuel, I hope he does not continue to disappoint.
