Review of The Adam Project (2022) by Compi24 — 18 Mar 2022
Like Shawn Levy's previous Ryan Reynolds effort, "Free Guy," "The Adam Project" exceeds expectations for me, but not in the ways I expected. Where "Free Guy" had much more philosophical weight to it than I thought it would, "The Adam Project" really brings way more poignance to the table than I was expecting.
There are a couple moments of genuine emotional pause spaced throughout the film that help build the thematic backbone at hand. You also have to love seeing Ryan Reynolds taking a moment or two -- however brief they may be -- away from his usual Ryan Reynolds-isms to remind us all of the genuine dramatic talent he has behind that comedic persona we've all come to love over the years.
The humor is spotty and there's a de-aging effect that honestly lands somewhere between looking like Clu in "Tron: Legacy" and Voldemort on the back of Professor Quirrell's head in "Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone," but I'm generally inclined to compartmentalize these things in favor of the sense of enjoyment this movie evoked on the whole.
Not a bad watch.
