Review of The Adam Project (2022) by Theredsky — 25 Mar 2022

Definitely better than I thought it was going to be but still weak. There is some really good stuff here. Ryan Reynolds is doing some of his usual stick but he leans into the more dramatic and he’s really good.

I was very impressed with his performance here. Walker Scobell did a good job at portraying a young version of Ryan Reynolds. The quips and how they are delivered is exactly how Reynolds does it. Mark Ruffalo is pretty good as well.

The emotional beats are definitely very effective at points especially towards the end with the final scene featuring the 3 core characters. Really good scene and really good character work throughout.

The actual story here is weak. The time travel made some sense at first but fell apart by the end and besides the characters, there wasn’t anything about the story that stood out. The third act especially is very weak and anticlimactic.

There isn’t a strong conclusion and the conflict just kind of ends. There really isn’t a great buildup and that was very frustrating. As strong as some of the characters were, others were pretty bad.

Zoe Saldana gives a good performance but her character doesn’t do anything. She is just there to be Reynold’s wife and that’s her only purpose to the story and this isn’t some flashback. She’s essential to the story and then she just kind of leaves.

Catherine Keener was a bad villain. Her motivations are confusing and unclear and there isn’t any actual character there. Just a stereotypical villain. This definitely felt like a passion project from those involved but it just need its story to be improved and it would have been great.

If you like Ryan Reynolds then you’ll definitely enjoy this but you could probably pass on this.
