Because filming began under very different auspices than it ended, the overly long result is an uneasy mix of hero worship and character indictment. At its center, though, is a persuasive, illuminating expose of a complicated, contradictory and very damaged soul who has built a life riding narcissism as far as, and wherever, it will take him.
