Review of The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) by Chrisnorton — 06 Aug 2023
A beautifully shot comedy/drama with elements of dread and deep sadness from Martin McDonagh. The look of the film and breathtaking shots of the island off the West coast of Ireland are breathtaking. The film is expertly directed and crafted, with great lead performances and exceptional supporting roles for Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan. The film feels as though it is an allegory or fable akin to the Irish Civil war at the time with Mrs. McCormick (the old lady in black) serving as it's oracle or ultimate observer of events through time. The tone is difficult to adjust to at times, and the humor is very dark, but that is what you can come to expect from a Martin McDonagh film. Some scenes will leave you in absolute awe, like the one with Dominic and Kerry by the lake, but the movie overall lacks a bit in structure and lasting impact.
