If you're willing to forgive the anachronisms and whitewashing (both of which are fair criticisms) I think its ultimately a worthwhile remake. Coppola completely guts the story of melodrama and subplots.
The result is a sort of bleak thriller about interpersonal conflict, where the way the women undermine one another is just as dangerous as the man who suddenly upends their daily lives.
