The Dude is the fantastic main character of the movie, who is almost like nihilists, he isn't interested in having sex, having a family or even a job, but he wants his carpet (or rug) back, because that is what's important for him.
Clever, right? The movie itself is hilarious, and the histrionics of Bridges, Goodman and Buscemi are wonderful.
