Review of The Blackening (2023) by Moviemitch96 — 20 Jun 2023
A group of African-American friends all gather together for a reunion at a cabin in the woods, only to find that someone there is watching them and plans on hunting each of them down and killing them. Sounds like a pretty generic plot right? Well, as you can tell by the tagline on the poster, this is actually a film that manages to subvert a lot of the cliches and tropes within this particular genre, namely, the the treatment of African-American characters in most horror films.
It's self-aware and pokes fun at a lot of well-worn trends that we're used to seeing in films like this. Furthermore, the whole cast seems to be having a ball here and there are some genuinely funny moments and lines to be had here, even if it wasn't quite as funny as I'd hoped it would be.
By the film's final act, it started to become more predictable and had lost its edge for me, but overall, the humorous lines, subverted tropes, and commitment from the entire cast made for a fun enough way to pass the time.
