Review of The Bourne Supremacy (2004) by David G — 25 Aug 2012
Outstanding follow-up to The Bourne Identity. Just about everything you could hope for in a sequel, starting with a swift kick to the gonads of the status quo before branching out into an ever more smart and rewarding story full of conspiracy, corruption, revenge and redemption.
Old characters, including Matt Damon's Jason Bourne and Brian Cox's shady CIA chief Ward Abbott are given new layers, and new faces such as Joan Allen's frosty CIA suit and Karl Urban's ruthless Russian assassin keep things fresh.
Action scenes, in particular a stunning car chase (featuring perhaps the toughest taxi cab in history), are once again uniformly excellent, though director Paul Greengrass is unfortunately rather more fond of ye olde shakycam than Identity's Doug Liman.
It's not a deal-breaker but it is noticable. Locations are another highlight with Goa, Berlin and Moscow joining Identity's Zurich and Paris in the Bourne series' ever growing portfolio of beautifully-shot urban landscapes.
