Review of The Boy (2016) by Logan C — 25 Feb 2016
Is it predictable? No. Does it instead choose to devolve into the absurd and unintentionally comical? Yes. While this is a far better directed effort than director William Brent Bell's previous horror disgrace "The Devil Inside", this is still a disappointing, absentminded drop in the bucket that lacks any scares whatsoever.
Through the entirety of this (thankfully not overlong) trudge, I did not jump once and could always tell the exact moment the cheap jumpscare was going to happen - right down to the sophomoric ambiance drop.
As stated before, this movie is also hilarious in moments we're supposed to take it seriously, and that makes up a majority of the film; for a horror flick, that takes away all credibility early on.
On the very scant plus side this movie has, however, Rupert Evans turns in a surprisingly good performance for a movie of this nature - while Lauren Cohan just falls flat. It's so strange to see a herky-jerky, overly campy performance from someone we've seen shine so much in all aspects on TV's "The Walking Dead".
Here, she does a good American accent, but that's about it. But the worst part of this film is easily the plot twist. Wow, easily one of the worst turnarounds I've ever seen in recent memory - I'm almost impressed by how little believability it possesses! The sets and landscapes look fine I guess, and as said before Rupert Evans is good - but everything else in this boring screwball flick is much worse than the 32% it currently holds.
