Review of The Boy and the Beast (2015) by Tribidenadapak — 17 Aug 2017
The movie is really well animated and it's voice acting is just as well executed. Character design (only on a few characters) is fairly good as well. But it doesn't try to be more than the tropes it plays with, so it never accomplishes anything; The story is heavily lacking, the characters and their arcs are predictable and rushed, making it hard to connect with them.
There's an abundance of logic leaps so it's hard to take the movie seriously as it progresses, with each scene trying to be moving and impactful. Although there may be a few (very) limited, short-lived moments where the movie succeeds emotionally, these scenes feel more accidental.
If not that, they're dramatically heavy-handed. Some ideas that would give it more merit are touched at but for the most part left alone, so it remains aloof with it's own cliches. Overall, It's hard to watch something that feels like it's congratulating itself even with how poorly executed it is.
It's a good watch if you take it ironically, though, as blunt as that may be. Otherwise you'd either sit there seething or laughing at it. (Or both...
