Review of The Brothers Bloom (2008) by Aidan H — 23 Mar 2010
To make a successful confidence trickster movie, its wise to ensure that your main protagonists wield enough of the requisite cheek, charm and cunning to make them sympathetic to the audience while cheating the innocent.
With this in mind, its a wonder how this bunch of unlikely con-merchants ever earned the reputation afforded them in this weary endeavor. A deeply unlikeable Ruffalo, backed by his desperately glum screen brother, Brody, are easily bested and co-erced by their erstwhile prey (Weisz) in a series of location-heavy set pieces that go precisely nowhere.
Hilarity and suspense are entirely absent from the proceedings right up until the invariable twist which was hardly worth the almost two hour wait. I would suggest, that before undertaking another scam-based enterprise, they should consult films of the same genre (House of Games, Paper Moon and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels to name but three).
A very lacklustre performance in which no-one except the cast was fooled. A star for the lavish loacations.
