Review of The Children Act (2018) by Ben T — 03 Dec 2018
Emma Thompson plays an ice queen judge whose heart softens when she visits a Jehovah Witness, Adam, who refuses to receive a blood transfusion on religious grounds even though it will likely mitigate his leukemia. The subplot to this is the judge's strained and weary relationship with her husband, who notes to her that they haven't had sex in 11 months and is thinking of having an affair. The less said about what happens next, the better, as there are a number of twists and turns that will surprise and keep viewers interested.
Despite this intriguing premise, there are two faults with the film. The first relates to a decision that Adam makes towards the end that contradicts much of the earlier statements and behaviour of the young man...this may lead many critical viewers to scratch their heads. The second relates to the script, much of dialogue seems contrived and some of the jokes I'd heard before.
Finally, yes, Emma Thompson is good for most of the film (though she becomes a bit melodramatic towards the end) and the film will keep most people interested, however, a critical viewer may be left wanting more.
