Review of The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) by Richard S — 20 Aug 2018
I really liked the Cloverfield films....until I saw this. The first one was a standard monster movie filmed in a found footage format, the second , which in my opinion is the best was a claustrophobic psychological thriller and here we have the third, set at some point in the future when humans head to the stars in search of an alternate power source.
I was really looking forward to seeing the Cloverfield universe expand but this felt a bit of a mess. It's like a b-movie version of the superb sci-fi - horror Event Horizon. There certainly seem to be elements of that story that have been borrowed but where as that was tense and scary, here some of the scenes come across as unintentionally funny.
The only positive thing I took away from this film is it does kind of explain how the events in the other 2 films occurred and how all 3 are connected which is a great idea, it's just a shame the third film was so poorly executed.
