Review of The Conformist (1970) by Michael C — 26 Aug 2007
One of my absolute favorite films. The Conformist is the first of many collaborations between director Bernardo Bertolucci and cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. It takes place in the fascist Italy of Mussolini and deals with an easily influenced Italian that becomes a fascist. Durring his honeymoon he is sent to Paris to murder his former professor, a communist in opposition.
The film succeeds in every aspect. From the script, to the acting, scoring, and directing. The cinematography is especially fantastic as Vitorio Storaro uses a wide variety of influences and ties them all together like magic.
