Review of The Connection (1961) by Vincent B — 26 Apr 2015
(Seen in its original version, not translated nor subbed).
La French is a stylish 70's Polar movie based around the TRUE story of Justice Pierrre Michel (Jean Dujardin) and his crusade against the organised crime syndicate named the French Connection that operated in Marseilles and were responsible for the purest, most dangerous Heroin ever produced. The movie is a masterful piece of «Show, don't tell» in which the actors share a perfect chemistry and amazing dialogues in which you feel absolutely every single emotions the characters have at this moment. The story is as unromanced as it can be, Pierre Michel is not shown as a saviour and Gaetan Zampa is not a brainless monster. I felt empathy for the villain, his cause and ambitions, and was genuinely sad for him and his downfall and troubles.
Double that with amazing and historically accurate depictions of 1970's Marseille as well as a chilling soundtrack, La French is a powerful character study that is NOT an action flick, a celebration of a gruesome genre that deserves more love.
