Review of The Conspirator (2011) by Thomas S — 15 Aug 2011
I laughed so hard at this I had to share it. This is a one stare review for this movie at Netflix.
This is a bad movie. It wants you to believe that Mary Surratt was innocent and was railroaded by a military tribunal, because obviously anbody associated with the military is dumb and incapable of doing anything ethical. The fact is that many historians believe Surratt was guilty. At the bare minimum she did have some involvement and was by no means innocent. Having said all that, they still could have made a compelling movie despite the one sided revisionism. Look at Oliver Stone's JFK. That thing is filled with outright lies and make believe but it was still a very compelling movie. The Consiprator fails as both a history lesson and as a film. It also fails to make it's main point, that Surratt was only convicted because it was a corrupt military trial. Does anybody honestly believe Surrat would not have met the exact same fate if she had been tried by a jury? When you read glowing reviews of this film, just realize that what they are really saying is " I hate George Bush so much that I will sit through anything that criticizes him or his policies, no matter how dishonest or dull.".
This movie had NOTHING to do with George Bush.
