Review of The Dark Tower (2017) by Late R — 11 Aug 2018
Going into this without having read or even heard of the book, I had high hopes that it would be pretty darn good, especially with Elba and McConaughey playing key roles (the former is fantastic here and the latter gives one of the weaker performances I've seen from him).
But alas, you guessed it, it was disappointingly bad. The story certainly feels like it had a huge amount of potential, but they botched it in almost every way possible - cheesy characters and dialogue, a lack of focus and direction, being unable to settle on what tone they were going for, failing to translate the scale and severity of the so-called 'evil' into something that felt important, failing to really explain what is even happening etc.
etc. Basically, it was terribly directed and very badly adapted for film; everything feels so stiff, so staged, so hollow. The only reason to watch this is for Elba who, once again, proves he just needs the right role to turn him into the action star that he quite clearly is.
