Once upon a time I tried to read The Dark Tower series but was disappointed because I couldn't get into it and lost interest. I love the universe that Stephen King's stories inhabit, even in a seemingly unconnected story such as Hearts in Atlantis there is still a reference to The Dark Tower which could be easily missed for those unfamiliar with the story.

I was hoping the proposed film / tv franchise based around these books might capture my interest but the film fails on many levels. Firstly I think it was a mistake to begin 4 books in, there are so many unanswered questions for those unfamiliar with this universe that l left the film feeling unsatisfied. They weren't unanswered questions that left me longing for a sequel, they instead left me confused regarding several plot points. I think Tom Taylor was good as Jake Chambers, Idris Elba was fairly bland as The Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey disappointed as The Man in Black which is a massive shame because I was hoping for more of the sinister and creepy potential he showed on bad guy duties in Killer Joe. The film was ok but instantly forgettable and didn't leave me longing for a sequel.
